Passionately active on the electronic dance scene for more than a decade, in this regard, a retrospective collection of the most significant episodes from his early stages has been released last year via fellow imprint Cut Mistake Music, Chicago-native, Rochester, NY-denizen composer, producer, DJ and musician Jordan Lieb, under his Black Light Smoke moniker, has delved into a shape-shifting, retro-modern crossbreed of Post-punk /Shoegaze /New Beat /House/ Techno /Punk /Disco /Electro /Minimal Synth and beyond, through renowned labels such as Scissor & Thread, Hafendisko, Voodoo Down Records and NEIN Records and above all his own DIY imprint Death Decay Magic.
Right via the latter, Black Light Smoke teams up again with Brooklyn-based multimedia artist Léah Lazonick for the recently released “Work” EP along with an intoxicating retro music video for the dystopic led and title track, “Work”, created by Léah herself.
Introspective lyrics give life to the modern dystopic thought-form of working all the time at the expense of a meaningful existence.
Seizing the dark and slightly unnerving edges and rogue pulses of Electroclash, “Work” infuses noir-ish neon-lit sultry moods to stir the bewitching magnetic attitude of monochromatic female vocals with sinister, glowing, rising synth swathes, angsty, icy strains, ominous droning and skipping basslines, and soft tumbling and syncopated dance rhythms, bouncing and rumbling, underlying by an undercurrent of danger and doom, to swerve distorted emotional echoes into a cold, sterile void of dim and broken dreams.
Blurry surreal DIY footage captures an evocative photoshoot cast in mystery and edge to depict the iconic model-esque lifestyles of the ’80s and ’90s. Fluid neon overlays melt time and space around a sunglasses-clad beauty striking poses before a private audience of one whilst groovy picture-in-picture dissections, shadowy replications, and a musical backdrop adds panache and flair to the over-exposed projection of fierce power.
