After past releases on dance labels such as Esthetique and Nein Records, Black Boiler, the electronic project of French musician Laurent Audouin from Angers, a former member of early 2000s electropop act Kyu, and actually bassist of the indie rock/new wave trio Lowpkin, is back after six years with the single “Pilot”, featuring French chanteuse Malika Mourid, a.k.a. Bloom and the lyrics of Guillaume Asseline, a.k.a. Moon Pilot.
A distorted, sultry and steamy Dark Disco number, scented with Acid House and Dub undertones, churned and propelled by the relentless organic and non-organic throbbing of acidic buzzy and chugging bass grooves, hypnotic pumping drum programming and an array of clattering rousing percussions, topped by glitchy flickering synth spirals and female sensual yet stern spoken words, layered with elongated muffled male radiations, to build tension between running away and facing the truth.
In the DIY paired video, a couple performs a high-energy dance on the beach under transformative filters. They appear mainly as black silhouettes, but sometimes they turn red or partially disappear into the hypnotic ebb and flow of the waves, syncing seamlessly with the transformation of the soundtrack.
