Video Of The Day Basse Fidélité
It has already been five years since the enigmatic French DIY Coldwave solo act Basse Fidélité, from Lamagistère in the Occitanie region, appeared at WL//WH with a debut EP. We are pleased to have him back with a video by Jo Ll Cool for “Le culte”, lifted from the start of August’s five-track EP, “Vous êtes ici,” scheduled for a 10″ vinyl release the next October, already on pre-order, via Loretta Rec.
“Le culte” distils cool coldwave sonics with sharp, pulsing yet ghostly intensity through a briskly cracking low-end interlocking of meandering, rounded humming bass throbs, somber crisp stabs, and tightly clattery, dragging programmed beats, topped by an off-kilter synth-laced swirl of nervous shaking strains, droning spirals, and warped xylophonic chimes, surrounding smooth, slightly sung baritone vocals with a secretive urgency of skewed angst and glitchy perception.
In the paired visuals by Jo Ll Cool, a hazy white film combines with a strobe light to cover an ‘out of the window’ journey. During the trip, a train, buildings, a rippling body of water, an open field, and a handwritten sign with part of the words smeared off are observed. Finally, the shadowy silhouette of a person walking ankle-deep in a low tide sets a contrast against the fast-scrolling momentum of the soundtrack.
