WL//WH Video Of The Day Ancient Channels
Australian dreamy post punks Ancient Channels, based in Meanjin/Brisbane, consisting of Kelly Hanlon, Bec Martin, Talia Bond, Cameron Martin and Lloyd Martin, return after a five-year hiatus since their debut 2020 LP, “Moments in Ruin”, with the first single taken from the band’s upcoming second studio album, “Static Spirit”, due in 2026 via False Peak Records.
In “Static Spirit”, the group knit together their distinctive post-punk, darkwave and shoegaze leanings into a colder, more deliberate sound.
A steady, introspective burner simmering with rage and frustration expresses futility in the face of an environment designed to amplify it.
Driven by relentless drum patterns shrouded in a desolate, spectral hum of synths, “Chimera” pulses hypnotically along with disgruntled, softly spoken female vocals, stabbed by sharp, discordant wailing guitars, reverberating with pained spikey edges, that turn to wickedness and finally into a dark ritualistic howl, surrounded by an increasing wiry and cutting swirling intensity, to be engulfed in a dire swishing vibrant haze of feedback, pushing toward a solemn climax of fateful destruction.
The companion video for “Chimera” transforms still shots of Ancient Channels with an array of editing techniques. Symbolic imagery, obscure geometric configurations, and creepy, disjointed movements evoke an eerie sense of macabre brokenness, to sync with the dark identity explored in the soundtrack.
Ancient Channels‘ second LP, “Static Spirit”, is scheduled to be released in 2026 on False Peak Records.
