WL//WH Video Of The Day: ABRASIVE TREES “Carved Skull”

Video Of The Day ABRASIVE TREES

Started as the brainchild of Scottish-born singer, composer and musician Matthew Rochford (a former member of Silver Moth), the UK’s Experimental five-piece, made of, beyond Matthew himself (Vocals, guitars, synth), Jay Newton (Guitars, backing vocals), Will Tyler (Drums, bass, backing vocals), Ben Roberts (Electric cello), and Yunala Songweaver (Backing vocals), announces their partnership with Italian independent label Argonauta Records, by releasing “Carved Skull”, the first single from the debut studio album, produced by Niall Parker, “Light Remaining”, due in May 2026, paired with a video created by Jessica Wooller.

The group fuses elements of post-rock, progressive rock, post-punk, and psychedelia into expressive and exploratory songs rife with gripping arcane and dark moods.

“Carved Skull” is about the modern age oppressing kindness and care, causing people to feel pain, sadness, and fear.

Emotional, melancholic, and introspective, “Carved Skull” begins with a rousing call and response chant before turning dire and heavy, with a melting, riff-laden, swirling buzz of squalling and abrasive guitar passions, heightened by solemn layers of cello desolation, propped up by the turbulent, muffled thudds of hard-hitting drums and thick, gloomy bass throbs. When gently pain-filled, alienated vocals enter, the piece shifts into a bleak, arpeggiated, and distorted post-apocalyptic realm that trembles with the fear and anxiety of looming doom, culminating in an urgent churning group climax that leaves us wondering, “Are we divided?”

An insightful and immersive video, created by Jessica Wooller, uses shades of black and white, blurry illustrations, and esoteric figures, such as a flame dancing under inverted lighting and a magnificent great horned snow owl, to sync with the ceremonial nature of the intro. Then, after the moon cycles, a spiky, morphing synthetic orb spins, amidst mirror fragments containing the faces of Abrasive Trees, triggering layers of geometric configurations, cosmic imagery, and transformative multi-textural elements to bring forth subconscious thought forms. Finally, an elevated setting where streams of consciousness open and flow with cloudy yet observable connectivity syncs seamlessly with the end question of the soundtrack.
