WL//WH Track/Video Of The Day: PRISM SHORES “Holding Pattern”

Track Of The Day  PRISM SHORES

Prism Shores are Montreal-via-Charlottetown janglers with one foot planted in ramshackle C86-indebted indie pop and the other in the shimmer of early English shoegaze, who have revealed the first excerpt “Holding Pattern,” from the upcoming sophomore LP, “Out From Underneath,”  to be released through Spanish label Meritorio Records on January 10, 2025.

Beyond the threadbare references given to groups of this genre, namely Sarah, Creation, and Flying Nun Records, the Quebecois four piece are constantly able to impress their unmistakable sonic imprint through an innate penchant for melody.

This is the song that came together first in the studio. In our eyes it was always a strong contender for a single; it probably best encapsulates the evolving aesthetic direction we take on the record. It straddles the line between the C86-style jangle pop of our first record and the more atmospheric shoegaze and dream pop textures we incorporate into “Out From Underneath”

A tune about losing one’s footing under the weight of new surroundings, it literally rolls and lifts on skittering drum beats and snaky, rubbery warm basslines, fuelling rippling layers of sparkling guitar riffs and subtly droning distortions, adorned by bittersweet vocals weaving emotional quivers of high-strung angst.

The Official Video by Ana-Maria Espino Trudel sets a majestic forest with a scenic cliff backdrop behind Prism Shores as they perform “Holding Pattern” under a shifting day-to-night sky. A creative use of lights and shadows, along with disorienting camera work, perfectly captures the obsessive head space expressed in the lyrics, while a mysterious glowing orb gives hope in the darkness.

Prism Shores‘ second album, “Out From Underneath,” is due out, in vinyl 12″ and Digital formats, on January 10th, 2025, via Meritorio Records.
