Track Of The Day WAYS OF HIDING
Ways of Hiding is a Montreal/Tiohtià:ke-based melodic post-punk supergroup of sorts, comprising renowned stalwarts of the local punk-driven underground music scene, fronted by Anna Mayberry (Anamai, HSY), which recently followed up last year’s debut self-titled EP, with the 2-track single, “Endless / Bad Day.”
The four-piece delivers an electrifying push and pull between simmering and piercing, effect-laden guitar compulsion ala The Chameleons’ Dave Fielding, with an off-kilter magnetic whirlwind of impassioned childlike vocal harmonies, catchy and haunting at the same time.
Moody and wobbling and absolutely infectious, “Endless” bounces out with sizzling, steady drumming woven with humming bass lines to drive roving guitars, slicing through with a wiry, anxious ringing urgency against whispery, brooding female vocals that twist and turn into vibrant crooning angst, “I wish I could be in this with you.”
Not less compelling, “Bad Day” envelops in a swirling rush of obsessive ringing guitar agony, layers with a gloomy, sonorously meandering bassline, and a melancholic vocal delivery to evoke a sense of longing, angst, and bitter disappointment.
