WL//WH Track Of The Day: THE WELLINGTON “Solange”

Track Of The Day  THE WELLINGTON

Active since the early 2010s, the Indonesian Indiepop outfit from Depok, The Wellington, returns, after a long hiatus since the 2020 album, “Playmaker,” with a skimmed lineup as a power trio, to stir up their dreamy, nostalgic late 80s/early 90s inflected jangly guitar pop sound, to create dizzying spirals of stirring feelings and sensations.

The brand new single “Solange” via the Jakarta-based independent label Guerrilla Records, is a deeply sentimental song about a heartbroken soul searching for comfort after running away from loved ones.

Swaying on steady hypnotic drum beats and warm lithe bass pulses, vibrant guitar chords weave a sparkling breezy vapour trail of light wavering tinny humming strums and effect-filled high-pitched melancholic efflorescences, to shroud wistful anxious vocals, aching in nostalgic hopelessness.

“Solange” is paired with a fuzzy remix by the single’s producer Pandu Fuzztoni of “Lovely Sun”, a track included in the 2020 LP, who while keeping the group’s dreamy quality, provides a slanted, noisy melodic perspective.
