WL//WH Track Of The Day THE PRIDS
For around three decades persistent D.I.Y. mainstays of the Portland, Oregon dynamic underground rock scene, The Prids. rooted on founding members Mistina La Fave and David Fredrickson, with the backbone of drummer Geordie Thompson and bassist/keyboardist Cass Yates, are approaching the lowkey release of their 5th album “I Only Care About You and Me” due out on September 6, 2024 via This-A-Way Records.
Triggered by a couple of kindred spirit weirdos drawn together in a Missouri podunk, and relocated to the Pacific Northwest, The Prids has fluctuated with an uncompromising spirit through the ups and downs of life, starting with an ’80s-inflected Dark Post-punk sound, which reminded me of Adrian Borland’s The Sound, to gradually incorporate swirling Indie Rock, distortion-laced Shoegaze and atmospheric Dream-pop elements.
“Tell You Nothing”, the first and only foretaste from the LP, produced by Larry Crane (Elliot Smith, Cat Power, The Thermals), a Summer love song for weirdos about being mad at the other for trying to change, still spurts crisp energy and sheer authenticity from every note, through the infectious power of the melodies, the sparkling freshness and cohesion of the instruments, heightened by the band’s distinctive emotional-ridden, almost anthemic, airy use of dual vocal harmonies.
Driven by steady tight drum beats woven with meandering bleak basslines, effect-laden, sharp-edged guitar riffs wistfully reverberate, interspersed by sparse keyboard surges, around layered male-female vocals, releasing restless frustration amid gloomy backing tones.
Dubbed “the most cohesive record of their career”, The Prids‘ incoming album, “I Only Care About You and Me”, is certainly proof of a band that persists in creating highly compelling timeless guitar pop with passion and imagination, tomorrow we will be able to relish it.
Ltd. Vinyl 12″ LP on pre-order on the band’s site.
