WL//WH Track Of The Day: THE NEW ROMANTICS “Control”

Track Of The Day  THE NEW ROMANTICS

The New Romantics is the cinematic Synth-Pop project of experienced musician Brandon Biondo from Knoxville, Tennesseewith early endeavours in a couple of 00s bands such as Royal Bangs and Coolrunnings.

Framed by a retro cover artwork, not referring to the Modern Lovers or the power pop of the Romantics though, neither to some obscure proto disco-house records, even if our man is capable of writing catchy New Wavey guitar-laced numbers from time to time, The New Romantics‘ latest single, “Control”, rather ‘dances into the fire to fatal’ both mechanical and sensual synthy sounds from the early 80s that looked to glam aesthetics of Bowie and Roxy Music as inspirations, often powered with groovy funky bottom ends.

Thunderous stabs of old school drum programming, deep, buzzy, thumping bass and glaring swirls of sparkling arpeggiated synths, push and pull like a muscle amid the tension and release of slightly distorted, strained layered vocals, shifting between angst and aloofness, while challenging a partner to take control.
