Track Of The Day The Murder Mystery
More than two years after the one-off singles, “A Girl Named Red” and “Amphetamine”, the latter a remake of an old demo, which followed in turn the short time release of two albums, the self/titled “The Murder Mystery” (2017 ) and “HNFS” (2018), the Norwegian ‘doomsday pop’ band from the small town of Hønefoss, The Murder Mystery, founded in 2005 by Bjørn-Erik Borg and Ole Andreas Hagen, make a welcome return with the brand new single “Obsession” via Hello Human Records.
The duo deliver hypnotic, emotional, at times, danceable synth-pop patterns bathed in 80s retro dark shades, built on melancholic and haunting melodies, meandering post-punk bass lines in the foreground, and seductive crooning, combined with a dense and layered sound frame, where rhythmic and swirling electronic strains along with emotive played instruments, equally algid cold and passionate warm, vibrate and pulse in symbiosis.
The lyrics deal with a deeply romantic soul, who, though fearful and hesitant, finally decides to give love a shot.
Metronomic lashing drum machine punctuates the driving sonorous throbbings of a gripping broody bass line, reverberating, poignant guitar stabs and desolate, buzzing synths, shivering around the edges of achingly beautiful, smooth heartfelt vocals, longing to try another’s love.
