WL//WH Track Of The Day: THE GABYS “Colour Me Out”

Track Of The Day   THE GABYS

As a revered pioneer musician said, probably part of all ‘those few’ who after listening to the Velvet Underground ended up founding a group, the UK elusive bedsit duo The Gabys churns out their third self-titled EP, replete with fragile, at times ‘noisy’, rivulets of stripped down melancholy and dusty longing laced with trembly feathers of psychedelia.

Besides the austere lethargic Velvets lullabies and the lysergic indolence of Galaxie 500, the release notes from the Californian label Fruits & Flowers also add as comparisons New Zealand greats like Dadamah and The Garbage & The Flowers and the current crop of lo-fi ‘fog pop’ moodists, as the Bay area denizens April Magazine, Cindy and Mister Baby.

Left aside for the moment the dark nebulas of slightly abrasive and distorted tones from the previous EP, the first teaser “Colour Me Out” induces us to lie down and let ourselves be swayed by the languid and melancholic circular breeze of gently shimmered dry strummed guitar chords, lilted by repetitive tinny percussions and ghostly keyboard gossamers, whilst airy harsh yet melodious vocals release shy penetrating anxiety, striving to make amends with a friend before it all ends.

The Gabys‘ third 4-track self-titled EP will be out on limited 7″ Vinyl and Digital on August 23, 2024. On pre-order via Fruits & Flowers‘ Bandcamp.
