Track Of The Day The Death of Pop
Longtime fine crafters of an unpredictable and kaleidoscopic DIY pop since 2013, London-based four-piece The Death Of Pop, revolved around brothers Angus and Oliver James, together with Thom James and Richard Dent, seamlessly explores textures and moods, whilst progressing and renovating, by merging elements of shoegaze, jangle-pop, psychedelia and, at times synth-laden, dreampop, within the distinctive boundaries of a strong melodic sensitivity.
After a long hiatus, following the 2024 album, “Flog”, the English group returns with the double A-side single, “Who You Are/Were”, delivering two textural, tonal and lyrical distinct riffs from the same starting concept of change and perspective, that teeters between painstaking accuracy and loose spontaneity.
Two captivating home recording takes on the crackling and chiming jingle-jangle, swirling with compelling, emotive melodies and catchy refrains.
“Who you are”, about lying in order to pacify, sways on an insistent wave of tinkling guitars, as a heavy force weighs down on dreamy, melancholic vocals, laced with soft, secret whispers, to segment and spin the words into an eternal stuttering loop.
Deals with lying to get what you want, on the contrary, the crispier, airy and buoyant “Who you were”, that vibrantly pulses through sparkling wistful 6-string patterns and jagged riffs, swelling freely with sentimental, sullen vocals, layered with angsty enthusiastic backups.
As The Death of Pop turns 13 this year, the band looks forward to sharing more music soon. Keep your ears peeled!
