After a couple of early self-released singles, an EP for The Brian Jonestown Massacre mastermind Anton Newcombe‘s A Recordings and the promising debut album ‘In Heat Not Sorry’, the Irish five-piece from Cork, The Altered Hours, is back with a new single taken from the forthcoming ‘On My Tongue’ EP due out on February 24, 2018 via Art for Blind/Penske Records.
‘Open Wide’ is a dilated and hypnotic, bass-led, slow-burner sets on sharp and excruciating guitar lines and jangled arpeggios, interwined with the strained voice of Cathal MacGabhann and the fragile and sensual one of Elaine Howley, an enthralling psych version of the 80’s punk icons Exene Cerveka and John Doe’s harmonic dual vocals, that build an increasingly tense, obscure and disturbing climax, “it’s how you lie” they sing on repeat, on the verge to implode.
A song of captivating charm and unbridled emotional impact, pretty much impossible to be unaffected.
