Track Of The Day SUN SHINES COLD
Scottish veteran musicians Brian Jordan and Colan Miles, AKA Sun Shines Cold, based in the Scottish borders south of Edinburgh, return with the new EP “Alone”, as we already suggested a few months ago, could easily appeal to a diverse range of listeners with a mesmerizing sound that harmonises and refines all the most immersive and poignant elements from shoegaze, dream pop, post-rock and post-punk, hovering between dashes of emotionally burgeoning, introspective reverb-drenched atmospherics, gliding lift-offs of searing 6-string glares and coils of haunting noir-ish vibes.
“Alone” features confessional lyrics that reflect on better days whilst brooding in the numb pain of today’s lost connection.
Dark ethereal, echoing auras coated in dim cinematic synth flares, sway into flickering interstellar dimensions of heavy dragging drums, deeply punchy bleak bass pulses, penetrated through by reverberant, glistening guitar ripples, drifting towards hazy horizons of deep nostalgia and solitude, to shape a slow, warm and vibrant emotional flow saturated with a sense of infinite sadness, unfolding like a light, enveloping wistful breeze, constantly cloaked in a bleary light of coruscating resonances, shaded by lingering layers of unease, imbued by distant pain-filled male vocals brimming with emotional sorrow to fade and float away on a disconnected, severed existence of helpless longing and private agony.
The connection between the band’s mesmeric harmonies and dancing geometries of fellow long-time tireless electronic explorer Neil Landstrumm on remix duty, as former techno devotee I know quite well, has given rise to a more synthetic dreampop flair, amidst repetitive dry muffled snare beats, twines of chiming guitar lines and snaky bass pulsations with somehow familiar echoes of U2 “With or Without You” in the vocal refrain.
The final stargazing post-rock tinged ‘Exit Deep Space Instrumental’ version rounds off an EP absolutely not to miss.
