Track Of The Day STILL YEARS
Albuquerque, New Mexico-based synth-heavy post-punksters return after a five-year hiatus with a 5-track EP “There Are Dreams I Can’t Sleep Off,” whose proceeds will be donated to the Prairieland Defendants.
Formerly known as Loss of Breath, the band delivers a vibrant and earnest evocative array of encompassing chilly glowing synths, bleak bass meanderings and a stripped-down hypnotic drum programming, which provide a familiar 80s-tinged, post-punk/cold wave dismal and moody cinematic dark foundation for an ecstasy and agony of existential dread and emotional turmoil.
Imbued with a surreal spectral frenzy, the agonizing opening, “Peripeteia Baby,” stretches wistful, regretful male vocals of deep sorrow, to hang in a swirling and drifting, obsessive twilit blanket of desolate synths, brooding about a heavenly connection that turned to hell in the eyes of the one who feels eternally cursed, amidst a final emergence of sad feathery echoes.
One of the other highlights of the release is the more grounded, tighter and gloomier closer “Mirrorball Believer”, about the strangeness of how things change yet stay the same after a conflict in a relationship, all the while knowing the loved one who ran away will return. Mechanical crisp rhythms, ominously swelling bass drones, hopeless shiny synth stabs, and edgy slender flutters, frame bitter, foreboding male vocals, layered with high anxious back-ups, before releasing a giant falling breath of frustration.
