Soft Divide is the moniker of the New York-based tight-knit creative partnership of Jesse Steffen and Joe Cardone, which combines 80s tinged elements of post-punk, dream rock and new wave, through reverb-heavy guitars, brooding bass and spectral synths, to create hazy light-and-shade expressive soundscapes, awash with somber, moody, and atmospheric energy.
“Dressed in Black”, the band’s third single in a row, since the start of February, is about promising to get a dangerous friend home who is all alone and waiting.
Anchored around tight, steady drum patterns and a propulsive, gloomy bass throb, a nostalgia-inducing, chiming resonance of wiry guitar lines, glistens and shivers with wistful vibrancy, to swell over sad airy vocals turning to anxious support before fading away as distant echoes.
