We had the pleasure to feature at the end of 2020 the debut single, “Bobby Go Home”, from the Norwegian band based in Oslo, Small Boy, led by vocalist/keyboardist Daniel Lien and guitarist Daniel Eriksen, who finely concocted an endearing Guitar Pop-Rock sound initially sitting somewhere between the melancholic moodiness of the Smiths and laid-back Mac DeMarco vibes.
Having expanded their personnel to a bulky boy quintet and after releasing their debut EP “Wail” in 2022, the group went into a long lethargy, reappearing last week with the brand new single, “All My Friends”, and a more mercurial, effervescent and tinkling guitar sound than ever, heightened with the usual distinctive jaunty melodic quality and engrossing emotional croons.
The lyrics explore themes of self-discovery, the influence of relationships, and life challenges to uplift, inspire, and give courage.
Urgent drums and churning basslines fuel quick-swiping bright guitars spiralling in and out, shifting from energetic angsty riffs, and obsessive chiming arpeggios to jittery jagged strains, washed by airy warm keyboards, to chase soul-stirring vocals swaying between deep somber anxiety and raptured cries, layered by soft icy echoes, cause absolutely “All my friends are good at something” after all.
Keep up with Small Boy:
