WL//WH Track Of The Day: SILENT RUNNERS “Cannot Be Undone”

Track Of The Day   SILENT RUNNERS

Seamlessly straddling, along a decade, moody Post Punk and romanticized New Wave with a distinctive, infectious synth-laced melodic flair, Amsterdam-based four-piece Silent Running returns, after around a one and a half year hiatus, although continuing to play energetic and immersive live shows all across Europe, with the new single, “Cannot Be Undone.”

Less electronic and sharper than the band’s latest synthy deliveries, still absolutely captivating, the song builds up on an equally vibrant and atmospheric guitar work, together with a grounding, gloomy and meandering bass, which lays the highly emotional framework for the profoundly intimate and expressive vocal delivery.

When the truth hurts, blame the ones who cannot speak up.

“Cannot Be Undone” talks about a person who wonders, after feelings of being wronged by another, whether the reaction they had went too far, and worries about how the damage cannot be undone.

Melancholy, doom, and angst wrap themselves around the hypnotic mid-tempo drive of bouncing drum beats, woven with sonorously throbbing, coarse and sullen bass lines, stabbed by swarming jagged, abrasive guitar riffs layered with sparkling sways of aching echoing chords and desolate icy synth gusts against nervous, haunted, angry male vocals, regretfully wailing about denial, blame, and the possibility of being mistaken.
