David Betancourt is the talented frontman of the goth-rock / post-punk trio DATURA based on Wenatchee, WA, fresh from releasing their brilliant 80s influenced dark, vibrant and melodic sophomore 4-track EP “Bury Me”, give it a listen, you will not regret it.
Stuck in home confinement, without any possibilities of live gigs, he decided to revive his solo project SHANX FM and here it is the first tune “Sweet Quarantine”, a sad and bittersweet glimpse into the overwhelming loneliness and disconnection felt by an isolated young man during a quarantine.
Through classic Cure-sque guitar lines, icy synth swirls and gloomily enticing bassline, infused with heartfelt drama and melancholy, “Sweet Quarantine” shines with startling freshness and intensity, heightened by the captivating Moz-tinged emotion-rich David’s voice.
Resonant thudding insistent bassline along with steady punchy drumbeats, interspersed by terse double claps, set the relentlessly throbbing spine for an ethereal hypnotically hazy weave of reverb-infused wistful guitar melodies, seeped by bright flashes of frigid synths, that seethe, warble and dance in intensely vibrant harmony with angsty, nostalgic male vocals long, in detached depression, from the urgent fear of isolation.
