WL//WH Track Of The Day: ROCKET RULES “Quicken”

Track Of The Day   ROCKET RULES

After a couple of brilliant home-recorded EPs, nuanced and catchy enough to seize the attention of many pop aficionados, the Aussie bedroom duo Rocket Rules, made of musician and songwriter Baxter and chanteuse Rachael, ushers in another solid set of wonderfully crafted, sweetly melancholic, stirring songs nestled in a cozy niche between shimmering jangly Dream Pop and heady bursts of Shoegaze.

Both intimate and expansive, the mid-tempo “Quicken” stirs up a softly sung, anxious and wistful female vocal that wafts on a starry sky sculpted by perpetually sad rippling guitar twinkles, washed over by an abrasive rush of fuzzed-out distortion, putting off a significant confession for fear of a scathing response.

More brisk and urgent, the Alvvays-esque noise-pop of “Chapel St” explores the anticipation one feels after carefully choosing to spend a special night with someone, delivered by excited, dreamy female vocals, charged by noisy guitar riffs, releasing nervous yet hopeful energy.

The accompanied visuals for “Quicken” appear like a looping memory under a heavy fuchsia tint, drawing insight from the subconscious realm.
