Ringfinger, the Canadian Darkwave duo based in Vancouver, comes back after a long hiatus, since their 2023 debut album, “In A Black Frame“, with the new single “Three Stones” and a cover version of the 1991 R.E.M. classic“Losing My Religion” on the flip.
“Three Stones” enhances the band’s ethereal, transcendental resonance with a heavier use of synths, through a refulgent pull of deeply atmospheric, effect-drenched guitar work and swirling chilly synthetic architectures, dabbling in equally dark, vibrant, and dreamy echo-laden realms, never completely gloomy, with a penchant for sparkling rather than brooding.
With hints of the early 4AD and Project Records cultivated and evocative sound, the track is a lush, hypnotic melding of steady thumping beats and churning bass lines, with atmospheric shimmering sprays of six-string haze and drawn-out swells of loud piercing, chiming synths, making an achingly soul-stirring, throbbing aura of melancholic majesty that sprawls around dim, gravelly male vocals, shifting to haunted emotional longing mixed with frustrated anger and sad female echoes, to express the feelings of fear, confusion, and emptiness taking hold after a radical transition.
Clear-cut resonant 6-string tones, moving vocals and an otherworldly ambience for the band’s take of the R.E.M. classic “Losing My Religion“, sharply brightening its emotional core, rather than altering it.
