WL//WH Track Of The Day: PRUNE 99 “My Eyes Won’t Open”

Track Of The Day  PRUNE 99

French Dream Pop/Shoegazey band Prune 99 have teased their first “My Eyes Won’t Open”, taken from the debut EP, recorded and mixed by Edouard Lebrun (JeanJean, Odyssée, Autoscopy Records) and mastered by Norman Nietzsche (GoGo Penguin, Portico Quartet, The Whitest Boy Alive), scheduled for a digital release on May 10.

Influenced by the hauntingly beautiful ethereal gaze-pop of the latest Slowdive and the “emo goes indie” of bands such as Turnover to the dreamy caresses typical of the 2010s Captured Tracks roster, the ever-present Beach House or Warpaint, Parisian four-piece imagines sad, slow songs heavy on emotions without ever putting their foot down on the gas if not for occasional transient surges of textured riffs, distorted, yes, but never paroxysmal.

“My Eyes Won’t Open” is a song about facing reality and letting go of a relationship through a lens of compassion and melancholy.

Lilt by shaffling drum beats and warm round bass pulses, the song unravels a vibrant and poignant swaying crossbreed, sharp and delicate at the same time, of reflective effect-filled sparkling guitar melodies with obsessive hopeless ripples, intensified by fleeting sombre swelling riffs, to reverberate with aching melancholy over sad dreamy yet lightly abrasive vocals, releasing pain, longing, and hints of bitterness.
