After an acclaimed, especially in his native land, French-language debut EP, “The Adventure of Modern People,” in 2023, the Genevan musician Orphia develops and refines his exploration of the most obscure and dystopic pits of Electro Wave patterns, announcing his second 6-track opus “Beau Discours”, teased by the first single “Secrets” via local independent label Les Disques Magnétiques.
The Swiss artist delivers a bare, icy, syncopated, equally urgent and visceral, synthetic sound with strong dance leanings, cloaked in a glacial and bleak post-industrial ambience thick with fog, that treads on the tightrope between Cold Wave, Electro and Post-punk.
“Secrets” stomps unremittingly forward through a crackling and tinkly mechanical drum programming of unyielding bouncy and lashing snares, rubbed by buzzing undulating low ends, while poignant swathes of fascinating melancholic synth tones sprawl desolately over aloof doom-laden spoken words, shifting into an urgent chant, then a scream of frustration about how every secret becomes lost.
Interlacing mind and body, tension and introspection, emotive synths and crisp, punchy rhythms, Orphia transcends his 80s influence to create something distinctly vivid and modern.
