“a writhing, disenfranchised dance that merges post-punk’s dissonance with a brooding, eldritch undercurrent” promises the newcomer Australian 3-piece Oils from Sydney.
“Defend & Preserve” is the first of two tracks released, lyrically, it confronts the carnal, base of man’s nature through a lens of physical sensation and the tower of Babel.
The band yields a tense, powerful, vibrant sound with hints of early Killing Joke, Joy Division, and Protomartyr, charged by a shapeshifting throaty, at times spoken word, vocal delivery reminiscent of Shame’s Charlie Steen.
Agitated spasmodic drumming gallops and gasps with taut pinpoint bass lines and seesaw seething guitar riffs, amid biting stabbing jolts and eerie synth overlays, alongside impassionate husky broods, soaring into deep, urgent choral howls, unleashing anger and frustration into dark rousing waves of tension.
