The music of the Russian one man project of Evgen Syprun, aka Nova Guardia was already circulating on the web for some weeks and now thanks to the flawless taste and vision of the new German Squall label has finally a physical release with the debut 4-track cassette ‘Mirror’.
Inspired by synth-pop and darkwave of the 80’s, the music of Nova Guardia is private, experimental, raw, and in ‘Mirror’, weirdly danceable minimal synth sound, recorded using analogue gears and drum machines exclusively, along some kind of Mark E. Smith-like Russian talk-sing vocals, producing a darkly captivating powerful combination of subtle darkly melancholy and eerie mood.
An impressive debut from a very talented young musician, it would be a shame to see him go to waste in the Crimean crisis.
