WL//WH Track Of The Day: MONOCHROMATIC VISIONS “Mortal Shell”

Track Of The Day MONOCHROMATIC VISIONS

Founded in 2014 by South African-born, Athens-raised Arthur Pegis, later joined by Italian-born Thomas Bagnoli, London-based rock outfit Monochromatic Visions follows last February’s self-released third album, “Closure,” with the new single, “Mortal Shell.”

The band wields visceral, emotive intensity with brooding restraint, drawing on the moody mystique of post-punk, the misty atmospheric textures of shoegaze, and the subdued oppressive edginess of slowcore.

“Mortal Shell” is about surviving, by outliving the night in order to become the light.

Heavy trudging drumming punctuates the relentless gritty, lurking throbbing of an ominous thick bass line, which carries an oppressive, bleak inner darkness from the see-sawing lingering tension of aching, subtly ringing, descending guitar layers, drenched in reverb, with restrained, stabbing bursts of crashing, droning distortion, slowly engulfing soft, almost withdrawn male vocals, numbly seething with anger, joined by a silky, whispery feminine halo, before falling into the screaming siren vortex of oblivion.
