After a couple of EPs straddling years 2023 and 2024, Model Living, a Chicago-based post-punk quartet, returns with the new single “Head of Talent.”
The four-piece, formed in spring 2023, comprises vocalist Geoff Daniels, guitarist Jay Martinez, bassist Matt Ciani, and drummer Nico Ciani, is known for its angular songwriting and urgent yet poetic lyricism.
Sharp, catchy, nervy and cutting, “Head of Talent” is a danceable icy slice of pointed synchronized post-punk jitteriness.
The lyrics explore how the construction of things causes people to experience a continual rise and fall cycle that ultimately leads to, amongst other negative conditions, imbalance, disorder, emptiness and frustration.
The song whips seamlessly through slight shifts in structure and dynamic, revolving around the constant pulsating skittish drive of tight drum beats and slinky, bouncing bass grooves that fuel a spasmic call and response between concise stabbing riffs and sharp, obsessively ringing, wiry slivers, alongside chatty, disillusioned male spoken words, backed by bored echoes, turning caustic whilst swallowed by a harsh and scratchy cathartic coda of ‘wound up too tight’ edge and anger.
