WL//WH Track Of The Day: MI.EL “Grains Of Sand”

Track Of The Day  Mi.el

Formed in London by Ming (Brussels) and Ellie (Bournemouth), Mi.el emerged from a shared desire to create something raw, hypnotic, and emotionally resonant.

Blending atmospheric leanings pulled from Warpaint, Cocteau Twins, PJ Harvey, and Portishead, the Belgian-British duo patiently refined and enhanced their songwriting through a couple of singles, “Colours” and “Outside,” in the previous years, achieving more expressive evocative depth and distinctive hues as the forthcoming self-produced debut EP, “Grains Of Sand,” due early in 2026, is ready to showcase.

Whenever I’m feeling low, I try to remind myself how small we really are in this vast universe. We’re all just floating together through the same endless space, doing our best to make sense of it all. Somehow, remembering that eases the pressure and reminds me that I’m just a small part of something infinitely bigger. It’s a strangely comforting thought.Ming

The track talks about positive nihilism, a reflection on finding freedom in insignificance.

Suffused with intricate and enveloping introspective folk frames, subtle shoegaze tones and vague gleams of psychedelia, the moody and eerie “Grains Of Sand” unfurls bewitchingly spectral on the arcane hypnotic chords of wistful arpeggiated guitar melodies, stirred by muffled, yet agile percussive patterns and a plangent round bass line, along with sultry, lush layered female vocals, spellbinding with breathy, plaintive harmonies of restless and disturbing grace. Gradually, the instrumentation builds more vibrant and textured, led by the magnetic dark resonance of thick throbbing bottom ends, imbued with restrained sheets of distortion, and skeletal, tinny riffs, into a poignant freeing coda.
