Track Of The Day Preview MEMORIA
Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, MEMORIA is the solo darkwave/post-punk moniker of singer, guitarist, songwriter Tess de la Cour, also member of punk trio Snake and instrumental part in putting the Riot Grrrl Sessions.
“Black Coats / Whitefear”, a cover of Memphis’ band Lost Sounds, fronted by the sorely missed Jay Reatard, from the 2011 LP “Blac Static”, is the second single taken off Memoria’s upcoming first album “Cravings”.
Originally an energic and visceral garage-punk song that embued the fear and anxiety after the Columbine massacre, “Black Coats / Whitefear” is turned into a slow-paced mesmerizing darkly heavy synth-laden number that is as catchy as it is disturbing. Bright and eerie synth chords blend with steady drum pattern and resonant bass line relentlessly buzzing and pulsing throughout along haunted, harrowed, and pained powerful ‘Siouxsie-esque’ vocals trigger traumatic memories, angst, and discomfort in a merciless state of confusion and suffering. ‘My head hurts and it’s killing me’ she helplessly wails, shadowed by mournful glassy synth melodies, in an agonizingly emotional hypnotic coda.
The new single, along with the first guitar-charged ”Lights Out”, perfectly showcase the intriguing and powerful Memoria‘s nuanced darkwave sound, keep your ears peeled for the full experience.
“Black Coats / Whitefear” will be dropped on May 17, while Memoria‘s debut full-length “Cravings” is due to be released next September, both through Novoton Records.
Keep up with Memoria:
