I’ve already talked in the past, when I collaborated with a Greek website, about the amazing small Melbourne‘s DIY record and zine label Psychic Hysteria born out the enthusiasm and talent of Kurt Eckardt and Kalindy Williams and their related bands Astral Skulls and former Heat Wave now Hearts and Rockets.
Downbeat Melbourne outfit MARES, made up of Gemma (bass), Zoe (vocals and guitar) and Felix (lead guitar), have released their debut album “Wherewithal” right today, the first day of winter in Australia, of summer here instead.
Inspired by Rowland S Howard, PJ Harvey and The Triffids, Mares‘ music is minimalistic and intimate, dreamy and fierce. Dense with contrasting emotions of feelings of calm and tension, simplicity and intricacy, bliss and sorrow, lights and shadows.
An album that should be listened as a whole song to deeply appreciate its suggestions and meanings. “Astound” is very intriguing with hypnotic and evocative glimmering guitar chords, backed with smoothly rolling drums, that little by little get increasingly clear and noisy, interwoven beautifully with the stunning, distinctive and powerful vocals, reminiscent of Tracey Thorn of “A Distant Shore”. Evoking feelings of sadness, anger and frustration, moving and emotionally-involving.
Keep up with Mares :
