The time has come for the young English 4-piece from Hull, Lumer, comprised of Alex Evans (Vocals, bass), Ben Jackson (Guitar), Jacob Wardle (Drums) and Thom Foster (Synth), to release their debut 4-track E.P. “Blood on Suits”, on tape/digital, via the excellent small French DIY tape label Hidden Bay Records.
Dark and dangerous, raw and dense, sensual and hypnotic, the sound of Lumer combines the best bits of post-punk and noise-rock with fierce punk attitude and slightly hints of grunge and psychedelia.
I discovered the band in 2016 with an overwhelming and deranged single “Blunder” and since has grown from strength to strength, so much it’s difficult to highlight a single track from an overall more than convincing impressive EP.
After a droning atmospheric synth intro,“Ours is Treason” hits the ground running, the hypnotic, obsessive and clanging guitar riffs interwined with the superb melodic throbbing bass filled by relentless swells of keyboards supported by pummelling drums. The stormy raspy vocals begin in a muted frustration and quickly become a shouting anger of disgust against a man who abused a woman he recently know, on the verge of suicide. The intensity of the pulsating and distorted sonic wave, recalling Suicide’s Alan Vega synth-punk minimalism, grows increasingly, as do his helplessness and angst until the final climax, at once beautifully restrained and overflowing with poignant and dramatic emotions.
