I was waiting for some new material for a while, and, after seeing the visuals of their live performance (here) at the Musée des Beaux Arts de Rennes during Trans Musicales 2017 through kexp.org , my expectation was further increased.
French five-piece Le Groupe Obscur based in Rennes have finally announced the release of a new EP at the start of 2019 via Parisian label Midnight Special Records.
Unconventional and unusual, eccentric and esoteric embodied in a peculiar, poetic and intriguing array of live music, theatre, circus, carnival and fine arts, the band play a sublime blend of ethereal early 4AD poignant moodiness, lysergic and reverberated shoegaze guitar haziness and post-punk menacing broodiness spiced by literary and artistic suggestions.
Sophisticated and entrancing, first single titled “Piȼedelula” is accompained by lyrics in their own cryptic and fascinating dialect ‘l’obscurien’. Tinkling and hypnotic reverb-drenched guitar riffs, syncopated, solid drums, eerie synth and deep bass beautifully emphasise the echoing, angelic, tentalizing vocals, stained at times by an ominuous, robotic, buzzing voice, that ebb and flow, blinking and resounding gently, in a spectral and bewitched landscape of arcane and otherworldly beauty.
Expect more mysterious and alluring goodies from Le Groupe Obscur in the new year.
