Track Of The Day IRISH BASEMENT
Irish Basement is the DIY solo project of Washington, DC-based writer and producer Mike Toohey, whose brilliant debut single, “Union Station”, explores ‘the concepts of love, loss, and nostalgia over a sparkling soundscape’ through steady beats, post-punkish bassline, filling airy synth, and weaving in and out Wedding present-like C86 sparkling 6-string riffs, while the hazy-tinged downcast and somehow cosy voice shades the whole song.
The narrative lyrics recall a farewell at “Union Station” and the flood of doubt and angsty emotions that follow, whilst busy rhythms pound constantly as the sinuously tight throbs of a murky bassline glide below the ringing twists of jangly guitar melodies and the vigorous urge of shimmering riffs that wax and wane alongside intense, atmospheric, and nervous layered male vocals, unleashing obsessive heady wanderings into a swirling timelessness of romantic fear.
An invigorating and highly satisfying guitar-pop, for now, listening experience.
