Track Of The Day Ideal/Image
Ideal/Image is the new side project from the Ohio-based minimal modular synth musician Jeff Deane, best known under his main moniker Our Unseen Guest, someone might recall last year’s album “View From A Window” on Tonn Recordings.
Not his first extra ventures, the darker, with classical leanings, Testament of Orpheus was in 2023, Ideal/Image‘s 2-tracker “Hallucination/Another Life” features more relaxed, less oppressive rhythms, and no less engaging abstract, and contemplative atmospherics, sprinkled with misty melancholy and nostalgic nods to the ’80s New Wave.
The opener “Hallucination” unfolds on the off-tempo hypnotic pace of a punchy drum programming, humming bass pulses and the resonant oscillations from a glittering synth arpeggio with intervals of swelling lush, chilly buildups, whilst achingly gloomy, whispery vocals shift into a dreamy elated chorus, restlessly longing and waiting for another to get their life together.
The surreal and hazily reflective “Another Life” sways through steady repetitive beats and flickering glowing low ends, gently washed over by wistful pulses of vaporous bulging synth pads interspersed with glaring, lonesome emotional surges over desperate drowsy vocals, wrapped in a dreamy outer shell, anxiously longing, before becoming lost in a heartfelt and comforting orchestral piano-led finale.
