WL//WH Track Of The Day: I WOKE UP CHINESE “Reach for a Shadow”

Track Of The Day   I WOKE UP CHINESE

I Woke Up Chinese, the Italo-French collaborative music project centered around Bologna‘s musician and composer Gianni Lee, with the live keyboards and backing vocal enhancement of Cherbourg‘s Simona Binescu, affiliated with the Parisian cassette label Model Workers Records, has dropped the new single, “Reach for a Shadow.”

The group treads 80s-informed familiar Coldwave / Post Punk waters through an immersive blend of haunting reverb-filled guitar melodies, expressive synths and deeply emotive vocal broodings, to create evocative, atmospheric and moody sonic nuances.

“Reach for a Shadow” is about when all colour fades to gray and emptiness sinks in.

Led by a stark, surgical drum machine and thick, humming bass lines, repetitive, sparkling guitar chords, layered with lush, desolate string textures, infuse an obsessive, pain-strewn gloom that rises over haunted, agonized male vocals and ghostly female backups, to bring forth feelings of suffering, loneliness, and melancholy.

It would be easy to dismiss I Woke Up Chinese music as formulaic and predictable, although it’s an arduous undertaking to uncover the innovation in their genre, the nods to The Cure, and the likes of early And Also The Trees and Sad Lovers & Giants are clear, but what really matters to us listeners is the delivered dark emotions and heartfelt passion, and in that respect, the Italo-French unit is second to none.
