Track Of The Day GAP YEAR
Formed in early 2019 by esteemed musicians of the Western Australia rock music scene, through a mutual appreciation for mid-80s Australian iconic forbears such as The Church and The Go-Betweens, Perth based alternative indie pop unit Gap Year have unveiled the new single “Where I Came From,” the first excerpt from the upcoming anticipated second album scheduled for 2025 via fellow Blue Grey Pink label, the follow up to an acclaimed 2021 debut LP “Flat Out.”
Built around two primary songwriters and also the main lead vocalists and guitarists, Daniel Harrison and Lee Napper, fueled by the vibrant rhythmic section by Maddy Blue (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Ben Santostefano (Drums), and further nuanced by the synth of Rhien Tan, the five piece draw on the production stylings of modern North American groups such as Real Estate, The National and The War on Drugs.
The single delves into breezy and bright guitar pop realms with a heady flowing balance of galloping drum beats and serpentine humming basslines bouncing below an emotional meandering thread of skittering, shimmery riffs and sharp, sparkling 6-string melodies, layered with atmospheric synth veils, to achingly echo the winsome melancholic harmonic lightness of angsty, heartfelt vocals, repeatedly trying to explain “Where I came From” to a friend.
