Superb synth laden indie, dream pop debut from Austin, Texas based band Fanclub, born out of the striking blend between the sparkling and evocative guitars and keyboards of Mike Lee and the ethereal and emotional voice of Leslie Crunkilton supported by the tight percussive work of Daniel Schmidt.
“Leaves” is a song about falling down and failure, bringing to mind New Order in the way music sounds soaring and uplifting in contrast with very depressing lyrics. Driven by precise drumming and reverbed guitar layers, the hypnotic and swirling swells of synths are bolstered by the wistful melancholy counterpoint between the melodic bass and the ethereal, childlike yet despondent vocals emphasizing a deep sense of sadness, hopelessness, and inability to fit in with her environment.
