WL//WH Track Of The Day: DETECTS “Blind Spot”

WL//WH Track Of The Day DETECTS

Detects, the main project of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi-based musician and composer Warren Ard (also part of  The Starlight Run and Blue Livingroom), has dropped a two-track single, “Hold On”, featuring Emma Fruit from local band Nighdrator on backing vocals in the opening “Blind Spot.”

Deftly weaves synth-heavy ’80s New Wave/Post-punk proclivities with his familiar textured Shoegazing guitar work, built on chilled drum machine repetition and squawking retro-futuristic synthetic tones, equally epic and spacey in sound and feel, buzzing with a nostalgic, melancholic yet hopeful daze.

Dealing with doubt, uncertainty, and change, “Blind Spot” unleashes glaring, wistful, and edgy synths that waver and vortex, over an urgent underpinning of tight steady drum beats along an ominously resonant ascending bassline and persistent sparkling guitar chords, to wash over gloomy male vocals, layered and alternated with sad female angst, to fall in unison under a heavy mist of distortion.

The mid-tempo, enveloping, Gary Numan-esque “Sun On Your Shoulders,” is about striving for a moment of clarity during a personal struggle, wobbles suspended on syncopated mechanical drum patterns, sonorously throbbing basslines, sprays of penetrating guitar riffs and blasts of soaring icy bright synth tapestries, desolately swirling atop numb, depressed vocals rising into dull falling cries.
