Hailing from the burgeoning, at least from a musical standpoint, Midwest state of Ohio, DEEP//FAKE is the solo project of Cincinnati-based bedroom musician JP Wangm, who, since around 2022, explores enveloping and melodic retro-modern atmospheric Post Punk meets Darkwave territories, flush with somber melancholy and dreamlike imaginations, built on driving electronic rhythms, jangling and echoing shoegazing arpeggios à la Drab Majesty, and evovative icy synths, for an emotional, most of the time danceable, hypnotizing listen.
Following the sophomore EP Periodic Visions early in the year, the latest single, “Knife”, is about a dangerous relationship where one person only sees what they want to see and the other takes advantage of it.
Thrust by a frenetic relentless tempo, fueled by retro-charged steady snares along with both buzzing and spinning oscillating bass loops, “Knife” is wrapped in wavering, effect-filled sparkling veils of forlorn penetrating guitar reverberations and swirling hopeless synth flutters atop layered, disconnected vocals, choppily droning in and out with boastful honest cries.
