WL//WH Track Of The Day : DEAF “Truancy”

Track Of The Day

Thanks to my favourite blog about New Zealand music, Pop Lib, to whom I owe such as amazing bands as Death And The Maiden, Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing and recently Glove, just to name a few, I’ve discovered a new 5-piece from Wellington called Deaf, who few days ago, have released a mesmerizing, darkly and melodic, synth laden post-punk gem titled “Truancy”, first preview from the forthcoming debut EP due out in the year.

It’ll be a difficult task to add something meaningful to the, as always effective, Pop Lib’s post, anyway Deaf is are made of former members of Sunken Sea  and TiddabadesLuke Kavanagh (guitar and vocals), Hayden Ellis (bass), Craig Rattray (drums) and synth players Mat Machray & Jarrod Crossland.

A superb, hooky bass line lay the gloomy foundation of “Truancy”, followed by icey enveloping wistful synths and precise drums. The guitar layers punctate a sense of depression and frustration. Beautifully spiced up by the mournful and emotional Luke Kavanagh‘s unique vocals emphasizing his utter unsuitability for a serious bourgeois life that doesn’t allow his true self, “the clown” to show.
A compelling way to set the tone for their upcoming debut EP.

Keep up with Deaf :
