Wellington, New Zealand 5-piece Deaf have just dropped the second single from their forthcoming debut EP.
Comprised of former members of Sunken Sea and Tiddabades, Luke Kavanagh (guitar and vocals), Hayden Ellis (bass), Craig Rattray (drums) and synth players Mat Machray & Jarrod Crossland, the band’s powerful melding of mesmerizing and somber post-punk and introspective and atmospheric dreampop moods fully grabbed my attention with their single “Truancy” (here) released last May.
“Shards”, about an unrequited acceptance of the end of a relationship, is a captivating blend of heartfelt and persuasive songwriting, subtle gloominess and strong emotional and melodic sensibilities that echo moments of 80’s Marr/Morrissey magic. Driven by dire layers of synth woven with superbly melodic throbbing bass, and interspersed with an intricate web of sparkling and evocative guitar chords to create a beautiful shift of dark and light contrast, at the same time sparkling and reflective, deepened by the commanding uplifting emotional vocals. He’s by no means happy about the relationship ending, but he is fortunate to know what true love is.
Another poignant, genuinely impressive piece of songcraft.
