Although started in 2016 with the eponymous debut album, after a long hiatus, Darkways, the Post-punk / Darkwave solo project of Marc Perez from Barcelona, has shown throughout 2023 a distinctive knack for seamlessly blending retro and modern sonic suggestions, through obsessive and propulsive rhythms, penetrating ethereal guitars, intensely vibrant seething electronic atmospherics, and addictive emotive melodies, creating an overall fresh and compelling sound despite being firmly rooted in the ’80s heritage of bands such as The Cure, Clan Of Xymox and Sisters Of Mercy, to name a few, as well as suited to blow away the darkest of dancefloors.
The new single “Lies”, via RetroReverbRecords, explores the fear and/or manipulation that lies behind the people who hide their true selves from others.
A persistent hard-hitting drum programming and humming low end drive an urgent dense claustrophobic haze, lit by dramatic glaring synth flashes along with tightly piercing wandering guitar lines, to echo restless vocals, simmering with anger and pain, whilst trying to decipher another’s intention.
