Originating in Yogyakarta in 2014 by Vitus Yogi “Obluda” Prasetyo (Jurumeya) and Martinus Indra “Menus” Hermawan (To Die), the erratic Indonesian unit COLDVVAVE, with a 2020 full-length LP, titled “eigengrau,” and a bunch of singles under their belt, has resurfaced after a long hiatus with the new single “A Soul That’s Lost Its Shine.”
The band’s “Cold Sounds From Tropical Island”, stuck between the iciness of Coldwave and the stark intensity of Post-punk, recur, less synth-laden and with some atmospheric, murky post-metal tones, in the dreary, brooding and doom-filled new proposal, always deft in pulling and reshaping sonic patterns from the past through a raw and earnest, distinctive gothic sensibility.
“A Soul That’s Lost Its Shine” edgily throbs through a steady drum programming and moody lamenting bass loops into impending unfolding shadows, plagued by ominous, resonant undercurrents of droning, distorted guitar riffs and wailing, excruciating dramatic leads, to descend tragically with ghostly, haunted baritones, agonizing into a dismal, increasingly black pool of no return.
