Probably named after a song of early 80’s cult Icelandic trio Vonbrigði, Bömmer is the goth-tinged post-punk project of Reykjavík, Iceland based Georg Jónsson, with the help of his bandmate and life partner Júlía Aradóttir, from the noise/industrial/punk duo ROHT (Iron Lung Records).
Created around 2009, the group dropped two separate limited cassettes in 2012, filled with gloomy and energetic guitar driven sound, and then started operating for a while as a trio under the name Kvöl until 2016.
Released last July as very limited, 20 copies only, lathe cut 7″ via Óreiða label, and sold just at gigs, the 2-track single “Start b/w Come” has resurfaced recently on their Bandcamp.
Although the 80’s Mancunian post-punk hints sound clearly familiar, it was such a pristine little post-punk gem, especially “Start”, that deserves to be posted for those, like me, who may have missed it.
Searing dramatic and ominous swathes of icy synth lines, bleakly hypnotic desolate bass patterns, hissing synthetic snares and repetitive, tight drumbeats coalesce in restrained dismal ghostly halls of frosty, forlorn ambience stained with anxiety, tension and anticipation over fatalistic and detached crooning, sparsely echoed by female ethereal tones, making for dark, brooding, mysterious post-punk brilliance.
Keep up with Bömmer:
