Blue Unit is the 4-piece side project featuring members of longstanding Milwaukee-based dream pop / shoegaze band Brief Candles ‘flipping instruments with Brock Gourlie drumming in his 5th local band’.
“Evergreen” is the second single unveiled from the upcoming debut self-titled EP due out May 17, 2019, on Ltd. Cassette/CD and Digital, through young and ‘chilling’ DIY label Somewherecold Records curated with passion and enthusiasm by blogger and musician Jason Lamoreaux.
Moody, atmospheric and absorbing, with a delicately lo-fi approach, “Evergreen” unfurls brittle icy needles of wistful guitar melodies sprawling seamlessly throughout, backed by repetitive slow paced drums, infused with deep thrumming bass and subtle gauzy electric piano notes, over contemplative drowned vocals creating a blurry haze of pent-up emotions veering between elation and introspection, with profound melancholy and unease lingering underneath, as searing reverb-charged guitar leads, lit by crystal-clear piano tones, soar and drift with wrenching intensity striking ears and imagination into blissful involvement.
Evocatively immersive and seductive from its first to last breath, slightly darker and abrasive than the deliciously glistening and hypnotic poppier first preview “Drop”, “Evergreen” adds further intriguing sonic suggestions and sparks unmistakable anticipation for a riveting debut.
