Track Of The Day BELOVED BINGE
Intrigued by an alleged residence in Hellenic land, Beloved Binge is instead a longstanding nomadic art-pop duo consisting of Rob Beloved (guitar, low-voice, drums) and Eleni Binge (drums, high-voice, guitar, bouzouki, bass uke, keys, license plate). They hail from Philadelphia via NYC via Durham via Seattle, and have now relocated to Athens, “creating rubble pop rooted in a punk pot with a hint of old Greek mountain village uprising.”
Active since 2002, if you have time you can listen to funny, detailed stories about their adventures directly from the two main characters themselves on their YT channel or you can read their in-depth website, with six studio albums under their belt, the last of which, “Signals,” in the distant 2019, the misfit pop duo, after a long break, announce the realization of the new 7th LP “Godwit” in the new year, “a partial love letter and mourning dirge to nature,” anticipated by the first single “Awaiting Your Arrival for the Journey.”
Giving the vivid impression of two people who enjoy each other making amiably spontaneous, frugal and bubbly indie pop tunes nestled in DIY and Lo-Fi aesthetics, filled with driving rhythms, energetic jangling guitars, and drifting dual vocal blending in charming lighthearted, wide-eyed harmonies, with Rob’s gravelly deep delivery reminiscents of Calvin Johnson.
“Awaiting Your Arrival for the Journey” builds on three decades of Aikido practice by its primary songwriter Rob Beloved, where he explains his attempts to sit (meditate) and work through illusions of himself and others. What is our small place in a vast world that outlasts us?
The song stirs Moe Tucker-esque drawling, skittering percussions, windy humming basslines, churning guitar riffs à la The Modern Lovers, and fluting wistful organ motifs, coloured by heartfelt baritone vocals and high comforting female back-ups, exploring joy through a lens of letting go of preconceived notions about ourselves and others.
