Los Angeles-based dark synth-driven, Urdu-language music project Aurat (pronounced OH-RUT), meaning ‘women’ in Urdu, comprised of Pakistani–American vocalist Azeka and bassist/producer Gil, have just released the new 2-track single “Pyaar | Kya Hua”, a preview from the forthcoming full-length album due out in mid-June.
“Pyaar [Love]” is a surrealist and dizzying array of electronically-transformed, trance-inducing ritualistic Qawwali ethnic flavours, Pakistani mutant disco rhythms and 80s post-punk/synth-pop/new wave elements, reflecting their uniquely personal universe of Western influences mixed with arcane and spellbinding South Asian inheritances.
Enigmatic and supernatural female vocal harmonies resound in the backdrop as sharp and nimble snare beats combine with stuttering buzzing bass lines pulsing together to create intense emotions of subduing desire and longing spiced by layers of radiant synth as feisty, teasing, sad vocals exuding bewildering power, beauty and mystery that shimmer inside lurking painful gloom.
Keep up with Aurat:
