WL//WH Track Of The Day: ALAN HARMAN “In Vain”

Track Of The Day   ALAN HARMAN

Strung through with the DIY idiosyncrasy, rawness, and vulnerability that are intrinsic to much of the best minimal synth heritage, Montreal-based, Port Hope, Ontario-bred, synth worshipper Ethan Harman, a.k.a. Alan Harman, has dropped a 2-track limited 7-inch single via Nancy Records/Kernkrach, both of which have already appeared in a couple of his radio mixes.

Bridging past and present, the Canadian musician records and plays molding the organic imperfection and the frigid surgical analogue electricity of synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines, imbued with intimate detachment and dark, moody allure.

“In Vain” unfolds cold, skeletal, and repetitive drum machine programming along with burbling low ends, layered with obsessively teetering forlorn synth arpeggios juxtaposed with fizzling flubbery leads around dry, deadpan vocals, conflicted over who to blame, wearily sitting at the end of the world in silence.

On the flip, the mesmerizing instrumental “Walk” is a lonesome wander through a buzzy and mechanical driven stream of wavering reedy synth drifts laced with nervously flickering, crisp twinkling sequencies.
