On November 14, The Black Veils (Bologna, IT) released their fourth, and highly anticipated new album “Gaslight” LP through Icy Cold Records. It’s been four years since their last ‘wonder’, the “Carnage” LP, so I listened to “Gaslight” with great interest, eager to see how the guys from Italy have progressed, and I was certainly pleasantly surprised by the result.

The “Gaslight” LP sounds like the natural continuation for The Black Veils, showcasing the expected quality of their music in post-punk and darkwave, along with the passion that The Veils hold for the issues that matter to them. The new album features 10 powerful tracks that explore new dimensions in their music, and they achieved this without exaggeration, successfully retaining their core sound. With a discreet yet confident approach, they incorporate synthesizers as needed, enhancing the overall music while staying true to their original style.

I read these very interesting facts in the Press Kit:

What do you do when society has largely surpassed the satirical and grotesque portrayal of the world? When humanity itself is denied by ruthless social models?…Imagine watching the world collapse. Imagine feeling powerless, frustrated, angry. Imagine dancing among the rubble… The idea was to make it sound like a “funeral party”…If there is one constant in Black Veils’ imagery, it is cinema. The album takes its title from the single of the same name, inspired by George Cukor’s film, which for the band becomes an ambiguous portrait of the dynamics of manipulation…And then there’s Otto Preminger, Victor Sjöström, William Friedkin, Buster Keaton — each track contains film references that are brutally mixed together to portray the present in a surreal way.

Their inspiration may be surreal, but their music is anything but. The Black Veils create with measure and a focused imagination; they don’t get lost in their ideas, they don’t sound like a rehearsal. They have clear images of their music (and their lyrics), and this is the truth that they give freely on their new album.

The Black Veils are innovating the post-punk music they love, pushing it forward, and their latest album, “Gaslight,” feels like the natural continuation of the band, representing the next step in their evolution. It’s a cohesive and enjoyable album that stands out among my top releases of 2025 as it beautifully captures the essence of the band from Bologna, and I believe The Black Veils and their fans share similar perspectives on many issues. What could be more gratifying and grounded than that?

So, here it is: The Black Veils “GASLIGHT” LP through Icy Cold Records!!!

Keep up with The Black Veils
